Independent-World-Citizen, Björk

For two decades we Björk-fans have marvelled at her ethereal voice, and avant artistry. Now Björk's activist voice is rising with two recent performances of her single "Declare Independence". First there was Kosovo just days after liberation was declared, then this week's performance in Shanghai which caught the ire of the Chinese government officials after she chanted "Tibet! Tibet!" a few times at the conclusion of the song.

What do you think? Did Björk cross the line, or is it within her right as an artist and an independent-world-citizen to call attention to what is likely a larger issue of human rights?

Incidentally, one wonders if Bono had made the same chant after, say, "Sunday, Bloody Sunday," would he be drawing the kind of fire that Björk has.

I think it was a stroke of genius - especially since it brought the plight of Tibet back into the public eye with a bang. Every newspaper round the world was talking about it.

She's courageous.
