Ethical Beauty: The Healthy Hair Bar

Hollywood has the weave, but the Inland Empire has the natural hair. It's all good. But this is what a year off from damaging hair treatments looks like. Thick, healthy hair. I'm enjoying my hair journey.

But I still wonder if my natural hair is too ethnic for LA? Super straight is the favored style out here. Even though any straight style obtained with a flat iron is, on any hair type, potentially damaging, and not natural, people tend to think that the stick-straight styles are more "camera-ready" and, somehow, authentic. Why is this important? In this new economy, how much are we willing to pay to fake the natural flow? Can we just thrive and survive with our our natural looking selves?

Come on, since when does wearing natural hair signify slavery, as some may suggest? The great abolitionist Frederick Douglass rocked a 'fro! Yet, that was so-several centuries, ago, for sure.

Right now, camera-ready is the catch-phrase. And this style-phenomenon is becoming more-and-more popular. I am going to suggest that what is hot turns, cold, though. Let us consider the pro-power and authenticity of the natural.

While it can be tough out there for natural women in Los Angeles to connect socially with non-naturals over the issue of hair, it is possible. There will always be those who simply prefer straightened hair. Still, cute, professional, natural hair styles are the mark of authenticity. It may also be argued that protective hairstyles signal a kind of authenticity. It would be weird to choose who to work with based upon the texture of their hair, Grooming  matters, though.

What's a smart, professional "girl" to do in superficial, paradoxical La-La-land?

Answer: Go see Miss Whitney at the Healthy Hair Bar.

Hair stylist, Whitney, is an expert natural-hair stylist. Twists, twist-outs, braids, up-dos, her repertoire is vast. Will you give your hair a break this holiday season and go natural? Will you amp up the challenge, and go job-hunting for that dream job au natural?

What makes you happy about your hair? What's the longest you have gone chemical-free ? Natural, environmentally-friendly hair is strong and beautiful. Come out natural starlets. Shine on!
